Best Time to Visit Tanzania for a Safari (Month-by-Month Guide)

People ask us this question more than any other, usually in the first message. The honest answer is that Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the “best” month depends on what you want to see, how you feel about rain, and how much you want to spend. Here is how the year actually plays out from our base in Arusha.

The short answer

  • Best overall wildlife viewing: late June to October (dry season).
  • Wildebeest calving and baby animals: late January to February in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu.
  • River crossings on the Mara: roughly July to October in the northern Serengeti.
  • Fewer crowds and lower lodge rates: April, May and November.
  • Zanzibar beach time: June to October and December to February.

Tanzania’s seasons in plain terms

Tanzania sits just south of the equator, so there is no real winter. What changes is the rain.

Dry season (late June to October). The grass is short, water is scarce, and animals gather around rivers and waterholes. That makes them easier to find. Mornings and evenings on the Ngorongoro rim and in the Serengeti can be properly cold, so bring a warm layer. This is peak season, so lodges fill early and prices are at their highest.

Short rains (November to mid-December). Showers usually come in the afternoon and pass quickly. The landscape turns green again, dust settles and the migration herds start moving south. It is a quiet, good-value time to travel.

Green season (mid-December to March). Warm days, mostly sunny with occasional storms. This is calving season in the south, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth over a few weeks, and predators follow close behind. Birdlife is at its best as migratory species arrive from Europe and Asia.

Long rains (April and May). The heaviest rain of the year. Some smaller camps close, and a few roads get muddy. But the parks are nearly empty, the scenery is lush, and many lodges cut their rates. If you are flexible and want the Serengeti almost to yourself, this is worth a look.

Month by month on safari

January and February

The migration herds are on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Calving usually peaks in February. Expect lion, cheetah and hyena action around the herds. Our 5-Day Wildebeest Calving Safari is built around this window.

March

Still good in the south, though the first long rains can arrive late in the month. A good shoulder-season month.

April and May

Low season. Rain most days, but rarely all day. Excellent value, very few vehicles. Tarangire and Lake Manyara are lovely and green. Not our first choice for a first-time safari, but great for return visitors and photographers who like dramatic skies.

June

The rains ease and the herds move into the Western Corridor. Grumeti River crossings can begin late in the month. See our 7-Day Grumeti River Crossing Safari.

July to October

Classic dry season. The herds reach the northern Serengeti, and the Mara River crossings are the headline event. Crossings are unpredictable, so give yourself at least two or three nights in the north. Tarangire is also at its best now, with large elephant herds gathering along the Tarangire River. Our 7-Day Mara River Crossing Safari covers this period.

November and December

Short rains, fresh green grass and the herds heading back south. Good rates before the Christmas rush.

Best time for each park

  • Serengeti: excellent all year. Pick your area to match the migration.
  • Ngorongoro Crater: good all year because the wildlife stays in the crater. The dry season is busiest.
  • Tarangire: best June to October for elephants.
  • Lake Manyara: good all year. Green season is best for birds.
  • Arusha National Park: good all year and an easy day trip from town.

What about Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar?

For Kilimanjaro, the driest and most popular windows are January to early March and late June to October. We cover this in detail in Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro. For a beach finish, Zanzibar is best outside the long rains of April and May.

Our advice

If this is your first safari and you can choose freely, go between late June and October, or in February for the calving. If you prefer quieter parks and better lodge rates, look at November or early March. Whatever month you pick, a good guide makes far more difference than the calendar.
