Quick answer: The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October, when it is dry, sunny and slightly cooler, and from December to February, when it is hot with calm, clear seas. The main months to avoid are April and May, during the long rains.
What is the weather like in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is tropical and warm all year, usually around 26 to 32°C. What changes is the rain and the wind:
- June to October: dry season, pleasant breezes, great for beaches and exploring Stone Town.
- November: short rains, with brief showers and plenty of sunshine in between.
- December to February: hot and humid, with excellent sea conditions for snorkelling and diving.
- March: getting hotter and wetter towards the end of the month.
- April and May: long rains. Some hotels close, but prices are the lowest of the year.
When is the best time for a safari and beach trip?
Late June to October is perfect for combining the two. It is dry season on safari and dry season on the coast. January and February also work beautifully, with calving season in the Serengeti followed by hot, calm beach days. Read more in our best time to visit Tanzania guide.
Which side of the island should I stay on?
- North (Nungwi, Kendwa): swimming is possible at most tides, with lively sunsets.
- East coast (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe): long white beaches and big tides, popular for kitesurfing.
- Stone Town: history, culture and food. Spend at least one night.
When is Ramadan in Zanzibar?
Zanzibar is mainly Muslim. During Ramadan, which follows the lunar calendar and so moves earlier each year, some local restaurants close in the daytime and the island is quieter. Hotels and resorts carry on as normal. It can be a special time to visit if you are respectful.
