Planning and booking

How far ahead should I book?

For July to October and the Christmas holidays, 6 to 12 months ahead is ideal, because the best camps fill early. For other months, 2 to 4 months is usually enough. Last-minute trips are sometimes possible, so just ask.

Are your safaris private?

Yes. Every itinerary is tailor-made, and you have your own vehicle and guide unless you specifically ask to join a group.

How many days do I need?

Three days is the minimum for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Five to seven days lets you add Tarangire and Lake Manyara and slow down. See our safari itineraries.

When is the best time to go?

June to October for classic dry-season game viewing, and January to February for the wildebeest calving. Read our full best time to visit Tanzania guide.

How much does a safari cost?

Our private, tailor-made safaris typically cost about USD 400 to 800 per person per day with mid-range lodges and tented camps, and USD 800 and up for luxury. Here is the full breakdown: Tanzania safari cost.

On safari

What vehicle will we use?

A 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for game viewing and photography, driven by a professional guide.

Is it safe?

Tanzania is one of Africa’s most popular and stable safari destinations. In the parks you are always with an experienced guide who knows how to behave around wildlife. In towns, use the same common sense you would anywhere: don’t flash valuables, and use trusted transport.

Can children come on safari?

Yes, and families are very welcome. We pick child-friendly lodges and plan shorter drives. Some camps have minimum age limits, which we will tell you about.

What should I pack?

Less than you think. See our Tanzania safari packing list.

Travel documents and health

Do I need a visa?

Most visitors do. Apply online before you travel. Details are in our visa and entry guide.

Do I need vaccinations?

Yellow fever is required only if you arrive from or transit through a risk country. Malaria prevention is recommended for most safari areas. Always check with your doctor or a travel clinic.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. We strongly recommend insurance that covers medical evacuation and cancellation. It is essential for Kilimanjaro climbs, and Zanzibar requires visitors to have insurance.

Money

What currency should I bring?

US dollars (notes printed after 2009) are widely accepted. Bring small notes for tips. Visa and Mastercard work at most lodges.

How much should I tip?

See our tipping guide for safari and Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro

Do I need climbing experience?

No technical climbing is needed, but you should be fit and comfortable walking for 6 to 8 hours a day. Altitude is the main challenge, so choose a longer route.

Which route is best?

For most people, the 7-day Machame or 8-day Lemosho. Read best time to climb Kilimanjaro for more.
