Tanzania Visa & Entry Requirements 2026

Getting into Tanzania is not complicated, but it pays to sort it out before you fly. Here is what our guests need to know in 2026. Rules can change at short notice, so always check the official sources and your own government’s travel advice before you travel.

Do I need a visa?

Most visitors from Europe, North America, Australia and much of Asia need a visa to enter Tanzania. Some African and Commonwealth nationalities are exempt. If you are unsure, check with the nearest Tanzanian embassy.

How much does it cost?

  • Most nationalities: single-entry tourist visa, USD 50, for stays of up to 90 days.
  • United States citizens: multiple-entry visa only, USD 100, valid for 12 months.

eVisa or visa on arrival?

We strongly recommend applying online for an eVisa through the official Tanzania Immigration portal (visa.immigration.go.tz) at least a few weeks before travel. Processing is officially a few working days but can take longer, so do not leave it to the last minute. Print your approval letter and keep a copy on your phone.

Visa on arrival is still offered at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, but queues can be long after a big flight lands. With an eVisa you walk straight to the immigration desk.

Use the official government website only. Many lookalike sites charge extra “service fees” for the same visa.

Passport requirements

  • Valid for at least six months after you arrive
  • At least one or two blank pages
  • You may be asked for your return or onward ticket

Yellow fever

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you arrive from, or have transited through, a country with yellow fever risk. This includes some neighbouring countries such as Kenya. Long airport transits can count. If you are combining Tanzania with Kenya, Uganda or Rwanda, carry your certificate. Your travel clinic can advise you.

Other health advice

Malaria is present in most safari areas and on Zanzibar. Talk to your doctor about tablets, and use repellent in the evenings. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended, and it is required if you are climbing Kilimanjaro.

Visiting Zanzibar

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so your Tanzania visa covers it. Zanzibar also requires visitors to have travel insurance, which can be bought through the official Zanzibar insurance scheme. We will remind you of this when we plan your Zanzibar extension.
