7 Days Lemosho Route – Mount Kilimanjaro

Overview

Seven days on Kilimanjaro is the sweet spot. Enough time to let your body adjust, to notice how the landscape transforms from lush rainforest to lunar-like alpine desert, to build that quiet camaraderie with your guides and fellow trekkers. At Porini Catchers, we chose the Lemosho Route for this 7 Day Kilimanjaro Trek because it’s widely considered the most beautiful approach to Uhuru Peak, with high success rates and crowds that stay refreshingly small.
You’ll start on the mountain’s remote western side, walking through pristine forest where colobus monkeys swing overhead. Each day brings a new altitude, a new view, a new sense of what you’re capable of. The route’s gradual ascent helps your body adapt, and our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and altitude medicine. Summit night is challenging, yes, but standing on the Roof of Africa as the sun rises over the clouds? That moment changes people. This trek isn’t just about reaching the top. It’s about who you become along the way.

7 Days / 6 Nights Trek

12 Years Old

Fully Day Itinerary

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate, on the mountain’s western flank. After registration and a brief briefing, you’ll meet your guide and support crew, then step onto the trail. The first day is gentle, a perfect warm up. You’ll hike through montane rainforest, a world of moss draped trees, colorful birds, and if you’re lucky, glimpses of blue monkeys or the elusive colobus. The path is well defined and the altitude gain is modest, helping your body start to adjust. Mti Mkubwa Camp, your first night’s home, sits in a forest clearing where the sounds of the bush replace city noise. Dinner is served in the mess tent, and your guide will brief you on the days ahead.

Highlights: Rainforest immersion, wildlife spotting, gentle first day, mountain welcome.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Today the forest begins to thin as you climb higher. The trail opens up into moorland, where giant heathers and lobelias create an almost otherworldly landscape. The air is crisper, the views wider. You might spot the occasional Kilimanjaro serval or hear the call of exotic highland birds. The hike is steady but manageable, with plenty of time for photos and questions. Shira 1 Camp sits on a plateau with sweeping views toward the western breach. This is where the mountain starts to reveal its scale. Your crew will have hot drinks waiting, and dinner will taste especially good after a day on the trail.

Highlights: Moorland scenery, giant lobelias, expanding views, acclimatization hike.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

This is a big day for acclimatization. You’ll climb higher in the morning, passing the Shira Plateau with its dramatic volcanic formations. The trail leads to Lava Tower, a striking rock pinnacle at around 4600 meters. You’ll have lunch here, giving your body time to adapt to the altitude. Then, instead of staying high, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp. This climb high, sleep low strategy is proven to help with altitude adjustment. Barranco Camp sits in a dramatic valley beneath the Barranco Wall, which you’ll tackle tomorrow. The afternoon is for resting, hydrating, and soaking in the mountain’s raw beauty.

Highlights: Lava Tower viewpoint, climb high sleep low, Barranco Wall views, acclimatization focus.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Barranco Camp

Morning brings the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non technical scramble that feels adventurous without being dangerous. Your guides will walk you through the safest route, and most trekkers find it surprisingly fun. Once you crest the wall, the landscape opens up again, with views of the southern ice fields and the valley below. The trail to Karanga Camp is undulating, passing through beautiful alpine terrain. Karanga sits in a sheltered valley, a peaceful spot to prepare for the push to base camp tomorrow. Your crew will keep you well fed and hydrated, and your guide will check in on how you’re feeling.

Highlights: Barranco Wall scramble, southern ice field views, alpine scenery, steady acclimatization.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Karanga Camp

Today you hike to Barafu Camp, your base for summit night. The trail is shorter but steeper, climbing through rocky alpine desert with minimal vegetation. The views, however, are immense. You’ll see the summit ridge ahead, a reminder of what’s to come. Barafu Camp sits at about 4670 meters, on a rocky outcrop with panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The afternoon is for rest, light meals, and mental preparation. Your guides will brief you on summit night, explaining the gear, the pace, and what to expect. Try to nap, stay warm, and trust the process.

Highlights: Base camp arrival, summit ridge views, alpine desert landscape, summit briefing.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Barafu Camp

Summit day starts around midnight. You’ll wake to hot tea and biscuits, then begin the ascent in the dark, headlamps lighting the path. The climb is steady and slow, a test of mental and physical endurance. As you reach Stella Point at sunrise, the view over the crater rim and the glaciers below is worth every step. From there, it’s another hour or so along the ridge to Uhuru Peak, the true summit at 5895 meters. Take your photos, absorb the moment, then begin the long descent. You’ll return to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp, nestled in the rainforest. Exhausted but elated, you’ll celebrate with your crew.

Highlights: Midnight summit push, sunrise at Stella Point, Uhuru Peak achievement, celebratory descent.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Mweka Camp

Your final day on the mountain is a gentle descent through the rainforest back to Mweka Gate. The air is warmer, the path softer underfoot. It’s a time to reflect, to share stories with your fellow trekkers, to thank your guides and porters who made this journey possible. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates, a tangible reminder of what you’ve accomplished. After a brief celebration, we’ll transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha or to the airport for your onward journey. You’ll leave tired, proud, and maybe a little changed.

Highlights: Forest descent, summit certificate ceremony, crew appreciation, journey end.

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch included | Overnight: Trip ends in Arusha or at airport
