5-Day Big Five Safari Tanzania

Overview

Let’s be honest: seeing the Big Five isn’t just a checkbox thing. It’s that heart skipping moment when you lock eyes with a lion, or when your guide gently taps your shoulder and points to a leopard draped over a branch, almost invisible unless you know where to look. At Porini Catchers, we put this 5-Day Big Five Safari together because we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between seeing it all and actually enjoying the journey.
We take you through Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro, the holy trinity of Tanzania wildlife, giving you time to settle in, ask questions, and just be there. Our guides are the kind of people who can tell a buffalo’s mood by the flick of its tail and know exactly which acacia tree the leopards favor for afternoon naps. This trip works whether you’re a first timer with a shiny new camera or a seasoned traveler who just wants to sit quietly and watch the world go by.

5 Days / 4 Nights Safari

Easy

2 Years Old

Fully Day Itinerary

We’ll pick you up while the morning is still cool and head out toward Tarangire. The drive itself is lovely, rolling hills, small villages, the occasional giraffe silhouetted against the sky. Once we’re inside the park, it feels like stepping into a postcard: giant baobabs, dusty plains, and elephants, so many elephants. Your first game drive is relaxed but exciting; no pressure to see everything at once. We’ll keep an eye out for lions and buffalo too, but honestly, just watching a family of elephants interact is worth the trip alone. You’ll sleep at a cozy camp or lodge nearby, with the bush humming softly outside your window.

Highlights: Elephant herds everywhere, those iconic baobab trees, easing into safari life.

Meals Plan: Lunch on the road | Overnight: Tarangire lodge/camp.

After breakfast, we say goodbye to Tarangire and start the journey to the Serengeti. It’s a bit of a drive, but the scenery keeps changing, highlands, forests, then suddenly endless plains. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch somewhere quiet (keep your eyes peeled; wildlife doesn’t take breaks), then continue with game viewing as we go. The central Serengeti, especially around Seronera, is fantastic for predators. Lions here are almost casual about being watched. You’ll settle into your camp as the sun starts to dip, maybe with a sundowner in hand, listening to the distant whoop of a hyena.

Highlights: Landscape shifts, picnic under the African sky, Serengeti lion sightings.

Meals Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Central Serengeti camp/lodge.

No packing up today. Just you, your guide, and the Serengeti from sunrise to sunset. We’ll head out early when the cats are most active, maybe track a leopard through the riverine forest, or watch a cheetah scan the horizon. If the migration’s in the area, the sheer scale of it can feel overwhelming in the best way. Lunch is a picnic somewhere scenic, and the afternoon is for following whatever catches your interest: a family of warthogs, a tower of giraffes, or just the way the light hits the plains. It’s a long day, but the kind of long day you don’t want to end.

Highlights: Full day immersion, leopard luck, migration magic if timing aligns.

Meals Plans: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Central Serengeti camp/lodge

We’ll do a gentle morning drive as we leave the Serengeti, then start climbing into the Ngorongoro highlands. The air gets crisp, the views get bigger. Once we reach the crater rim, you’ll understand why people call this place special. Your lodge probably has a view that looks like a painting. The afternoon is yours: maybe visit a Maasai village if you’re curious, take a short walk, or just curl up with a book and watch the clouds roll over the crater edge. Dinner tonight feels a little celebratory—you’re almost at the finish line.

Highlights: Crater rim views that stop you mid-sentence, cool highland air, time to breathe.

Meals Plans: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Overnight: Ngorongoro crater rim lodge.

The final day starts early as you descend 600 meters into the crater floor. This is one of the best places in Africa to see the black rhino, and the density of animals here is incredible. You’ll spend about six hours exploring the floor, watching hippos in the pools and flamingos on the lake, before having a picnic lunch by the water. Afterward, you climb back up the crater wall and drive back to Arusha. You’ll arrive in the evening, ready to celebrate completing the Big Five quest with your group.

Highlights: Black rhino sighting, crater floor game drive, hippo pools, farewell dinner.

Meals Plans: Breakfast and Lunch included | Overnight: N/A (Trip Ends)
